Tom Selleck was originally cast for the role of "Indiana Jones" but had to drop out due to his contract for Magnum P.I. 

With Indiana Jones announced this would be the perfect time to cast Tom Selleck in a role for the new film, perhaps as a villain or rival/friendly archaeologist. With his rugged good looks and youthful attitude Tom Selleck would be perfect to bring his signature charisma to the film.
