K C started this petition to Land Transport Authority

Bendy buses in Singapore were introduced in 1996 with the introduction of TIB838H under Trans Island Bus Services (TIBS). Since then, TIBS (now SMRT Buses) procured about 600 bendy buses. Most of them got scrapped, and now there is only 40 bendy buses in Singapore, since the last order of bendies in 2015.

However, they are limited to only feeder services and some trunk services like 169 and 858. 10 bendy buses were also transferred to Singapore Bus Services Transit (SBST) in 2018, due to the Bus Contracting Model (BCM). 1 bendy bus has been transferred to Tower Transit Singapore (TTS) so far in 2021.

Nowadays, Land Transport Authority (LTA) is procuring more double decker buses under the BCM, and not bendies. This petition was made to make LTA procure more bendies. The reason of that is because bendies can hold many more people. The current MAN bendies can hold about 131 passengers (80 standing and 51 sitting). Even though the current double decker buses can hold up to 139 passengers, most of the commuters do not go up to the second floor, whether if they are lazy or if they carry much stuff, and especially the elderly who may have difficulty walking.

Bendy buses are also more efficient in managing the load of commuters. They have 3 doors, which makes boarding and alighting of the bus easier. Double deckers, on the other hand, even though some of them have 3 doors, the fact that it takes longer for them to alight is an issue. Along with the fact that the steps on the double deckers are sometimes too steep, which might make commuters fall and injure themselves.

Roads are not an issue as well. Basically, the bendy buses can manuevere some narrow roads well. For example, SMRT Bus Service 912 can manuevere a few roundabouts in its route.

Wheelchair accessibility is also not an issue. There is enough space at the second half of the bus to install another wheelchair ramp and a second wheelchair bay. This may also be useful for more standing space. Double deckers also have 2 wheelchair bays but they are quite close to each other, which might make it more inconvenient.

Therefore, I would like to start this petition so that LTA may procure more bendy buses. It would be really useful and therefore it can benefit more commuters daily. It is becase bendy buses are as useful as double decks and they can also even out the load of the bus capacity, especially in feeder bus services without double deckers.
