Make All Classes at Loyola New Orleans Shifted to a Universal Pass System

The Issue

With COVID-19 rocking the nation, and the rest of the world, students across the country have been sent home for the semester. While many students are able to go home and continue studying, learning, and actively participating in classes, there are many others who are now at a disadvantage. One problem that has been raised is the financial stress that some students face, making them unable to provide themselves with the proper technology to complete online classes. For some, home is across the world in Europe, where class time for us could be 8 hours behind for them. For students to be successful in times like these, it is required that everyone has equal opportunity to learn. If equal opportunity does not exist, then actions need to be taken to help stem the tide. Loyola New Orleans should make all classes this semester operate under a universal pass system to ensure that the students who do not have an equal opportunity to learn can still make it through the semester without having to withdraw, or fail, losing the money they spent on classes in the first place. On transcripts, students will see a P for pass with an explanation of the trying times that we are in currently. Equal credit will be given, and the explanation is there for graduate schools and employers to see so that they do not look at students with a P as less deserving, as they would with a normal pass/fail class. This model is based off of the UP system that Yale University students are proposing to their admin. Please sign this petition to show the administrators at Loyola that the student body stands together on this and wants the success of all our students, and not just the ones who have access to technology and are in the United States.
