Petition LMU to Allow Optional Pass/Fail for Spring 2020 Courses

Petition LMU to Allow Optional Pass/Fail for Spring 2020 Courses

The Issue

We, the students of Loyola Marymount University, would like the University to consider giving students the ability to opt in/out of making their Spring 2020 courses pass/fail with credit. We believe that moving to online instruction along with added stresses from new familial responsibilities due to COVID-19 will significantly impact our abilities to perform well academically. As such, we believe it would be unfair for these unprecedented circumstances to negatively affect our GPAs and add unnecessary stress. We believe it would be beneficial for our classes to be pass/fail so as to promote academic growth and also allow room to tend to our families and personal situations. Below is a list of schools already transitioning to pass/fail along with supporting articles.

Current Schools Moving to Pass/Fail:
Harvard: Departments Accept Pass-Fail Classes to Lift Pandemic Pressure on Concentrators

MIT: Pass/fail grading for all courses

Georgetown University: Opt-in to pass/fail grading

Carnegie Mellon University: Opt-in to pass/fail grading

CNN: Why a pass/fail option is a good move for everyone

We understand that these are difficult times for us all but just want to relay our concerns from the bottom. We are grateful for all the work you all have done thus far and we appreciate any sort of help in advance. Thank you.
