Air Miles cancels its cancellation policy

Thanks to everyone who signed this petition. The strong consumer protest led to proposed legislation in Ontario to ban expiry dates on loyalty points. The bill could become law tomorrow. That led LoyaltyOne to announce on Thursday, Dec. 1, that it was backing off from a plan to make all points older than five years lose their value by Jan. 1. The story led the CBC National news that night and I was featured in it. Not everyone is happy with the outcome. Those who rushed to get merchandise they didn't need want a refund. Those who hoped to transfer their dream rewards into cash rewards are stuck with two categories that can't be merged. I believe Air Miles bungled this plan at every step of the five-year journey. It lost consumers' trust and may never regain it. It should have backed off more quickly. The deadline to redeem points has gone away, but the loyalty plan still has major flaws.
