Air Miles must help members use points before they expire

Air Miles reward points will start to expire on Dec. 31, 2016. The parent company, LoyaltyOne, introduced a five-year deadline to redeem points in 2011, but has done little to spread the word.

Many collectors learned of the Dec. 31 expiry of older points only with intense media coverage this summer. They tried to redeem them and found Air Miles phone lines were jammed and its website was crashing. Email communication was eliminated in favour of live chat.

Many collectors also learned they could not redeem for groceries, gas or movies. Air Miles had created two categories -- dream rewards and cash rewards -- and if collectors did not ask for cash rewards, all future miles earned would go into dream rewards. The selection was skimpy.

The solution: Demand that Air Miles allow a one-time transfer from dream reward balances to cash rewards before the end of 2016.

Collectors don't want their hard-earned points to expire worthless. Air Miles is losing respect and its brand is being trashed every day. Giving more flexibility to collectors will help reverse the downward slide.
