The Lowther Estates, owner of much common land across The Lake District National Park have put forward a request for a certificate of lawfulness to install 10 x 40ft 'Gentleman's Residences' as they call them or as we know them Houseboats on the pristine habitat of Grasmere water.

This certificate may allow them permission to proceed without applying for full planning permission from the Lake District National Park.

This has been done for the sole purpose of financial gain with no consideration for the habitat, environment, many millions of visitors who visit the Lake District every year and local people.

It is most likely that developments such as access roads, reception centre, visitor centre, cafe, car parking, and hard standings will be required to provide the service to these Gentleman Residences.

Infrastructure such as jetties, pontoons, storage tanks and more will materially change the use and appearance of Grasmere Lake and surrounding area.

Grasmere is currently only used for limited recreation which includes small rowing boats, wild swimming, picnics, walking and fishing.

We have concerns around how the risks of up to 60 people sleeping, cooking, drinking and entertaining on the lake will be managed and the impact of this including the propulsion and safe operation of the boats and the sewage and grey waste they create during a week long stay.

This action if successful will impact all other smaller lakes,Tarns and meres in The Lake District National Park, we have started a campaign group to protest this action.
