The Issue

Since living in Jacksonville, I've seen firsthand how our community thrives despite the odds. However, recent spikes in utility costs have left many struggling to keep up with the financial strain. The Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) provides vital services to our city, yet the increased rates are disproportionately affecting those who are the most vulnerable, putting immense pressure on families trying to make ends meet.

According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the average electricity rate in Florida has increased by over 8% in the past year alone. While the national average is rising, many local leaders across the nation are taking steps to combat these increases, understanding the profound impact on their residents. Shouldn’t Jacksonville be part of this change?

We respectfully request that JEA:

Place an immediate pause on unnecessary or excessive rate increases.
Increase transparency by clearly explaining the reasons for any proposed rate changes and how customer funds are being used.
Hold public town hall meetings before approving future rate increases, allowing residents to provide meaningful input.
Expand bill assistance and affordability programs for low-income households, seniors, veterans, and individuals on fixed incomes.
Conduct an independent review of JEA’s spending and long-term financial planning to identify ways to reduce costs without placing additional burdens on customers.
Prioritize affordability and customer impact in all future budgeting and rate-setting decisions.

We are calling on the JEA to reconsider its rate structures and provide relief to its customers by implementing tiered pricing, which would accommodate lower-income households. Additionally, investing in energy efficiency programs, offering payment assistance plans, and increasing transparency in billing practices could provide substantial support to thousands of Jacksonville residents battling financial hardship.

By signing this petition, you join a collective voice advocating for a fairer and more equitable utility pricing system. Help us ensure that Jacksonville remains a city where everyone can afford the basic utilities necessary for a decent quality of life. It's time for JEA to step up and prioritize community well-being over profits. Let’s push for the change our community deserves. Please add your signature and share this petition widely.
