Across the United States, young people are stepping up to voice their political and social interests, exemplifying the vibrancy and engagement of our youth. However, these voices often cannot resonate in the areas that impact them directly, such as their education. Currently, many school board elections turn a deaf ear to those below 18, isolating a critical demographic - high school students who are directly affected by these decisions daily. This age restriction prohibits 16- and 17-year-olds who are profoundly impacted by school board decisions from having a say in their education, even though students are the ones impacted by school board decisions.

Lowering the voting age to 16 will foster early political involvement and representation, leading to more engaged and informed adult voters in the future. With the help of the NJ Institute for Social Justice and Vote16NJ, cities like Newark have already successfully implemented this idea, and we need to bring this to Monroe to amplify our voices.

We must encourage participation in our democracy as soon as individuals are impacted by its decisions. It's time to grant 16-and 17-year-olds a seat at the table where the future of their education is discussed.
