The Issue

Lower the Speed Limit on State Highway 46 Through the Esperanza Community

Protect Families, Students, Cyclists, and Everyone Who Uses SH 46

State Highway 46 is one of the fastest-growing corridors in Kendall County. As thousands of new residents move into the Esperanza community and surrounding neighborhoods, traffic has increased dramatically. Yet the speed limit on this stretch of highway has not kept pace with the area’s transformation from a primarily rural roadway into a busy residential corridor.

Every day, families enter and exit neighborhoods, children travel to and from school activities, cyclists share the road, and pedestrians navigate nearby crossings. Vehicles traveling at highway speeds through this growing community create unnecessary risk and leave little margin for error.

We are asking the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Kendall County officials, and our elected representatives to:

Conduct a new engineering speed study for the SH 46 corridor through Esperanza.
Reduce the posted speed limit to better reflect current traffic patterns and residential growth.
Increase traffic enforcement while long-term improvements are evaluated.
Review the need for additional safety measures, including turn lanes, improved signage, lighting, and pedestrian accommodations where appropriate.
This petition is not about slowing progress. It is about ensuring that infrastructure keeps pace with the rapid growth occurring along SH 46.

Our community deserves a roadway that balances mobility with safety.

If you live, work, attend school, or travel this corridor, please add your name and help encourage meaningful action before another serious crash occurs.

Together, we can make SH 46 safer for everyone.
