Hello Hamden!
First and foremost, thank you to everyone who has mobilized. I have never felt a stronger sense of community in Hamden than I do now. In a time of such political division in our country, it’s incredibly heartening to see so many people coming together. While this situation is frustrating, there is comfort in knowing we are in it together, working toward solutions.
I want to share my approach to addressing this issue—one that is flexible, open to feedback, and informed by my experience as a business strategist. I see this movement naturally evolving through three key phases:
Phase 1: Information Gathering
The first step is ensuring we are as informed as possible. We cannot develop solutions without understanding all the facts—something that often feels like a rare commodity these days. This means starting with no assumptions and no blame. I truly believe that no one is out to get us; rather, a series of unfortunate decisions and circumstances beyond our control over time have led to this situation.
This weekend, I will be speaking with individuals who have deeper knowledge of the budget process, its challenges, and potential solutions. If you have expertise in these areas or suggestions, please feel free to message me.
Additionally, I will be compiling resources shared within our group and creating a list of people interested in helping organize and support further initiatives. It’s also crucial to manage expectations. A mill rate in the low 30s is likely unrealistic, and even getting below 40 may be difficult. However, our goal is to move the needle and ensure we all have a clearer understanding of why this is happening and what can be done about it.
Phase 2: Analysis & Community Input
Once we have a solid foundation of knowledge, we will begin reviewing the budget to identify potential areas for cuts or adjustments. As part of this, we will be creating a survey to gather input from town residents about which services and budget items matter most to them. This information will be shared with the Mayor’s Office and Legislative Council to help guide their decision-making.
Additionally, we will hold community meetings and open forums where residents can propose alternative solutions and discuss possible approaches.
Phase 3: Advocacy & Action
The final step is presenting our findings to decision-makers and ensuring we stay engaged and informed throughout the process. This will be an ongoing effort, and sustained involvement will be key to making a real impact.
How You Can Help Right Now
In the meantime, here are some immediate ways to stay involved:
Sign & Share the Petition – The petition has already caught the attention of the Legislative Council and Mayor’s Office. Beyond that, it serves as a tool to collect emails so we can send updates to those who may not be on Facebook. It also demonstrates the breadth of community concern. Petition Link
Invite Others to Join Our Facebook Group – Hamden Residents Unite is a space for updates, discussions, and coordination. Please share it with anyone interested in staying informed.
Attend & Promote Our Upcoming Event – This event will provide a deeper dive into our approach, gather community feedback, and connect people who share the same concerns. Open Forum - Wednesday, March 26th @ 7 PM
Addressing Other Approaches
I’ve seen various suggestions—contacting the Attorney General, reaching out to major media outlets, or even filing lawsuits against the assessment company. While I completely understand the frustration behind these ideas, I believe that at this stage, our best path forward is through collaboration. We already have the attention of the Mayor’s Office and Legislative Council, so let’s focus on real solutions, accountability, and constructive dialogue. Transparency, respect, and engagement will take us further than conflict ever could.
I see every comment, every concern, and every idea. I hear you. I appreciate you. And I’m proud to be part of such an engaged, thoughtful, and hardworking community.
Thank you!
Grace
