Lower the parking rate for UMass Boston commuters
The Issue
Attention UMass Boston administration: lower the parking price for UMass Boston commuters. The parking rate at UMass Boston is higher than at other UMass campuses. UMass Boston is a commuter school; most of us don’t live on campus, so we have no choice but to travel there every day to get our education. The price should be lower for a large commuter school in the Boston area. Many students are already paying tuition, which is a financial strain. The train is available but has its own issues. Many students want to drive to school but face high costs.
Parking at UMass Boston is unfair and unsustainable for students. Many students have to pay the $15.75 parking rate or the $576 semester pass. The semester pass might seem reasonable, but many students don’t have $576 in their pocket. Many students are frustrated by parking costs, so they spend extra time circling campus or the city to find cheaper street parking, arriving late to class. Yes, there is off-site parking called Bay Side parking. The Bay Side parking semester pass is $529.20. That's still expensive, considering it only went down $46.8. The parking rate is $9.45, which is affordable, but many students prefer on-campus parking because it's closer to their classes. Even though off-campus parking is cheaper, it still went up; last semester it was $8 per rate.
Some students pay to take the train, but it's not an option for everyone; they might live outside the MBTA area, or taking the train may take longer than driving. Many students don’t rely on the MBTA because unexpected delays can make them miss class or arrive late.
Other UMass campuses charge their students less for parking than UMass Boston. For UMass Lowell, the parking rate is $250 for a semester pass and $8 per day. Another UMass college with cheaper parking than UMass Boston is UMass Dartmouth, where a semester pass costs $163, and Lot 18 is free for students and visitors.
We are asking UMass Boston to lower the daily parking rate and semester pass price, and offer a discount to students with financial need. If you agree, sign this petition and share it with a friend or classmate; the more signatures, the better the outcome and the harder it is to ignore.
Remember, we pay for education to invest in our future, not empty our wallets for parking. Please join me in advocating for a solution to this pressing issue by signing the petition today.
