Lower food costs on San Jose State University campus
The Issue
As a student at San Jose State University, I spend countless hours on campus, dedicating time to my studies and extracurricular activities, just like many of my peers. However, when it comes time to eat, I am faced with two overwhelming challenges: high prices and limited options at the campus food outlets. This issue not only affects my wallet but also impacts my health and overall academic performance.
Imagine spending a long, exhausting day attending classes, library sessions, and group meetings, only to spend exorbitant amounts on a meal that may not even be healthy or satisfying. Many students, like myself, have found themselves choosing between affording educational materials or paying for a nutritious meal. For a significant number of us who rely on access to affordable and healthy food to maintain energy and focus, these high costs are a barrier to success.
College students are often strapped for cash. According to a national survey by the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice, nearly 48% of students experience food insecurity at some point during their college careers. San Jose State University should not stand by and allow its students to become part of this statistic. In fact, investing in student nutrition can lead to an increase in academic performance, retention, and overall well-being.
It’s time for SJSU to reconsider its food pricing and vendor contracts. Partnering with suppliers who can offer nutritious meals at lower prices would be an excellent start. Additionally, implementing a meal subsidy program or expanding existing financial aid packages to cover meal costs could significantly alleviate the burdens faced by financially struggling students.
By taking these steps, San Jose State University would demonstrate its commitment to student success, health, and equity. Affordable meals should not be a privilege for a select few but a right for all students striving to better their future.
Let's urge the administration to prioritize this critical issue. Sign this petition to call on San Jose State University to lower on-campus food costs and make eating affordable for every student who roams its halls. Together, we can change the narrative for students at SJSU.
