Lower Customs Duties on Imported Used Technology

The Issue

India, bustling with a vast array of ambitious engineers, students, creators and innovators, hosts an endless pool of potential. Yet, many amongst us lack the financial capability to acquire the overpriced computers and other technical gadgets necessary for studying, research and creation. Used, yet fully functional tech flies under our radar, discarded and dumped as e-waste in countries with continuous supply. Such devices could be a lifeline to us; however, the exorbitant customs duties levied on tech imports, frequently inflating the price 3 - 4 times, serve as a significant hurdle.

It's a global issue. As per the Global E-waste Monitor 2020, 53.6 million metric tonnes of e-waste was generated worldwide in 2019, a disturbing number that's set to rise to 74.7 million tonnes by 2030. Unfortunately, only 17.4% of the 2019 e-waste was collected and recycled. We believe that by easing up on the import duties, we can contribute to the recycling efforts and make technology more accessible to all.

Join us in our appeal to the Government of India to review their current policies and make customs duties on imported used technology equitable and affordable. This step could unlock previously inaccessible opportunities for millions. Please sign and share our petition. Together, we can make a difference.
