Lower campus housing costs for UCO students
Lower campus housing costs for UCO students
The Issue
Being a student at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO), I have firsthand witnessed the strain that high tuition and living costs impose on us. Many students at UCO do not have the option to live off-campus due to lack of transportation or affordable alternatives, forcing us into expensive on-campus housing. This inflates our overall educational expenses, and it has become increasingly unsustainable for many of us already burdened by rising tuition fees.
Currently, the cost of campus housing at UCO rises annually, while financial aid does not keep pace with these increases, leaving students in a financial bind. According to CollegeFactual, the average net cost for a student attending UCO after financial aid is approximately $10,432 annually, which includes housing costs. This figure poses a significant hardship for students from low to middle-income families striving to achieve their educational dreams.
Lowering the cost of on-campus housing would relieve a substantial financial burden for students, allowing us to focus more on our education rather than on financial survival. $4,800 per semester for housing is too steep for many of us who are already struggling with the costs of books, tuition, and daily necessities.
We propose a reevaluation of the housing costs with an aim to reduce these expenses at least by 20-30%, aligning it more fairly with the average student financial situation. In parallel, exploring partnerships with local housing authorities to offer subsidies or discounts for students could alleviate some of these pressures and provide an immediate remedy.
In making these changes, not only would UCO enhance its reputation by demonstrating a commitment to its students' well-being, but it would also help support the mission of widening access to higher education for all, enabling students from diverse economic backgrounds to pursue their aspirations without the looming worry of crippling debt.
Join us in urging UCO administration to take definitive action to lower the on-campus housing costs. Please sign this petition to support affordability for all students and to ensure that the pursuit of knowledge does not come at an unmanageable financial price.
