Abandon plans to build a truck stop at exit 24 on I–81 in Meadowview, VA.

The proposed truck stop, which is less than 1000 ft. from the Meadowview Elementary School, endangers the health and safety of our children. No other public school in the U.S. is closer than this to a truck stop. The truck stop will have a devastating effect on the health of the school children. Pollution from diesel and gasoline exhausts is known to contain carcinogens and to greatly increase the risk of respiratory disorders, particularly asthma. The school is downwind from the proposed truck stop, and the inversion effect, common in and around the school, will hold the pollutants close to the land surface. There will be increased noise pollution and, at night, light pollution, and there is always the danger of a toxic spill. In addition, traffic to and from the school will substantially increase, and congestion will lead to more accidents. Prostitutes, predators, and other unseemly characters often find a haven at truck stops, and we do not want these people in close proximity to the elementary school children.
