This petition had 5,448 supporters

Dear leaders of the Republic of South Africa,

With no foreseeable South African lockdown end, the foreign spouses, life-time partners, and lovers are waiting in vain with ever-diminishing hope to see their partners in South Africa.

In a time where love is more important than ever to make this world a better, more compassionate place, we are asking you to please consider and address this petition.

UPDATE: Bi-national couples of South Africa have so far organized themselves in a Facebook Group #LoveIsNotTourism SA. This petition is officially connected with this group.

If you are a bi-national couple of South Africa please join us in the group.

THE SOLUTION

We ask you to allow foreign spouses, life-time partners, and lovers to enter the Republic of South Africa to reunite with their South African partners under these conditions:

  1. Proof of a partnership in the form of either marriage certificate, valid relatives visa, proof of social life (photos, emails, messages)
  2. Negative Covid-19 Test
  3. Valid International Medical Insurence
  4. If there is a seat on a repartition flight to South Africa, a possibility to acquire it
  5. All the conditions under the travel visa request

With these requirements, a travel visa can be issued (If the eligible person doesn't currently hold a South African visa).

Upon arrival to South Africa, the following would be in place:

  1. 14-Day self-isolation or 14-Day quarantine in a government-designated facility if self-isolation is not possible
  2. Adherence to lockdown regulations

WHY I CARE

I am married to a South African national, and our home is in South Africa. When the Covid-19 hit, I was working on a cruise ship. As the virus progressed, cruise ships got banned from entering ports and thus were unable to repatriate their workers. In May, I finally arrived in my homeland, Slovenia. From that moment on, I am waiting, hoping, and praying that someone would alert the South African government of the situation my wife and me, as well as countless other cross-border couples, are facing. With the trending of the following hashtags:

#LoveIsEssential

#LoveIsNotTourism

#LiftTheTravelBan

The EU leaders started recognizing the struggle and making relevant changes to the regulations. Denmark is the model country that defined and allowed for lovers to reunite, regardless of the partner's country of origin.

We pray that South African president Cyril Ramaphosa, as well as the South African Government and the National Coronavirus Command Council, will see the good in the reunification of lovers and grant it to all cross-border couples.
