Support for Michael Savage

The Issue

We recently heard that Professor Savage is being let go of his teaching position at Louisiana Tech due to him discussing topics that fall outside of history. I, along with other students, are writing you this letter to express our dissent to this action. Having Professor Savage as a member of Louisiana Tech faculty is outright an honor. A man with the knowledge, intellectual capacity, and first hand experience of history is undoubtedly an invaluable asset to any institution.

To hear that he is fired over discussing race, religion, and politics in a history class is laughable. How can we as students understand complex history that these three elements are integral parts of without discussing them? Thinking that history can be understood without talking about these topics is supporting a skewed version of history that hurts students rather than teaching them truth. Students have a right to disagree with him, but that should be a sign that he provides insight and experience to history that we previously weren’t exposed to.

Upper level history students will suffer by not having him, and the ones who have will voice their opinions alongside me to show our support. Please consider the students you are affecting before finalizing this decision. The disfavor of one student should not equate to ripping such an incredible experience from people devoted to the study of history. Losing Michael Savage is an egregious mistake.
