No More Mikes

No More Mikes
The Issue
Everyone knows the LSU Tigers as a winning football team that regularly sends players to pro teams. What people outside Louisiana may not know is that since 1936 their mascot has been a live Bengal tiger. On home football game days, Mike's cage on wheels is parked by the opponent's locker room in Tiger Stadium so opposing players must pass by his cage before the game. With his cage topped by the LSU cheerleaders, Mike rides through Tiger Stadium before the start of home games, to a terrifying cacophony. Although 10-year-old Mike VI lives in a luxurious compound on campus, he has no companion. Recently he was diagnosed with a rare and fatal cancer of the face. He is receiving treatment which may extend his life for a couple of years, but those in charge have already said they will seek another tiger upon his demise. Previous efforts to end this inhumane practice have been unsuccessful. If this campaign goes national, we may be able to stop the use of living wild animal mascots wherever they exist.
