I believe that homework in Loudoun County Public Schools should be illegal in middle school and high school. There are many reasons why homework is just flat-out stupid. Students go to school for almost 7 hours. You go to four classes each day for an hour and a half. Don't you think that they can teach you everything you need to know in that hour and a half? Homework is essentially practice at what you're learning at school, and teachers should set aside time for this practice in class. If you cannot learn what you need to do in that timeframe, then you may visit the desired teacher during resource, before school, or after school. Most students, however, do not need this help, and homework should not be given just to give something for students to do. Homework causes students to stay up late at night and causes stress and lower grades. It also stresses the parents of the students, as well. Giving students homework and projects also discourages extracurricular activities, as it takes up much free time after school. Let's take a look at that phrase, "free time." This should be a time when students may do whatever they please, not be forced to do homework in which the teachers could have given in class. Public education is free. We're not paying to learn these things, so they should not force us to do boring homework after school. In conclusion, I would like to state again that I would like a ban on work assigned outside of class in Loudoun County Public Schools.
