Continue to fund Programs for Older Adults Classes

In 2007, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) employed more than 400 Older Adult teachers at more than 200 locations. It has systematically starved the program so today it has fewer than 20 teachers at fewer than two dozen sites. Older adult classes teach health education and fitness, use of technology for communications, financial literacy and scam avoidance, and brain fitness. Each of these classes help keep older adults independent and out of care facilities. Health and exercise classes help our moms and dads avoid falls, a leading cause of older adults needing hospitalization or expensive care. Brain fitness combats depression and suicide by maintaining communication skills and self-confidence. Financial literacy keeps mom and dad from being victimized. These critical classes need trained, certified teachers and measurable outcomes, all of which the LAUSD's POA (Programs for Older Adults) provides.
