The co-location on Teresa Hughes AND the construction of KIPP's potential building must be stopped.

We have a variety of concerns that will threaten student safety and health.

First, we have five elementary schools within a one mile radius (Teresa Hughes, Elizabeth Learning Center, Ellen Ochoa Learning Center, Jaime Escalante, Park Ave). We do not need another school in this area where there is already a dwindling population. Especially a school that is on the path towards the privatization of education.

Next, the construction of a new school will cause a disruption to the neighborhood. Teresa Hughes Elementary is next to the train train tracks on Otis & Salt Lake and it causes heavy traffic congestion already. We do not want to further increase the already problematic issue of traffic. Additionally, there is a lack of crossing guards which is a huge concern for the safety of our students.

Last, the land where KIPP wants to construct their building was formerly a tire/mechanic shop on Otis & Elizabeth. The soil has not yet been tested, which threatens the health of our students and community members. The city of Cudahy is where a Delta Airline plane recently dumped jet fuel, which further contaminated the land in the city.

The community members and teachers are STRONGLY OPPOSED to the building of KIPP AND the co-location on Teresa Hughes Elementary.

The informational meeting scheduled for tomorrow will NOT happen per LAUSD orders due to the spread of COVID-19.

However, PLEASE continue to talk and make commotion. This is also a threat to public health.
