In 2016, AMCAL Multi-Housing Inc. petitioned for the land where the Florence Library currently resides as well as the surrounding area to build a five-story apartment complex. The original plan presented to the community included plans to renovate the library and keep it on the first floor of the housing project. However, in 2017, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas motioned to have the library removed from the plan because he believes the library "is not currently needed for any county purpose".

Residents of Florence Firestone are outraged and disappointed that the board of supervisors approved this project without the necessary impact reports and now have left the Florence Library without a permanent home. They are taking a crucial resource and icon of the community.

The Florence Firestone community suggest that the County of Los Angeles pause all aspects of the housing project for the following reasons: not enough environmental and social reports were done on how the apartments will impact the community, not enough residents were notified about the project, and because the library as of now does not have a permanent home.
