As the nation's highest funded police department, Chicago is America's largest city to have not committed towards police reform and defunding. Systemic racism has a deep rooted history in Chicago - which is one of the most segregated cities in America. George Washington Park stands at the end of Bronzeville, a prominent historically black neighborhood on the south side. To have a public space named after a man who owned hundreds of slaves stands as a constant insult to the integrity of the historically black neighborhood - which still feels the effects of systemic racism (little access to opportunities, food deserts, high crime, inadequate health care, etc.) We call for the renaming of George Washington Park with a community selected name replacement. It is important that the replacement stands as a well-respected Bronzeville figure, historical or current. We also call for the removal of the George Washington statue on 51st and King Drive.
