What is a democracy if the people's voices are not heard? In the past couple of years Chicagoans have dealt with questionable resource allocation, unbelievable amounts of corruption from our own alderman, and brutality from the police when simply seeking accountability. But how can one expect the servants of the mayor to be held accountable when the mayor themselves can not be held accountable? Chicago is one of the only cities in the United States that has no official mechanism to remove the mayor, and this loophole in our political system is part of the reason why our mayors continue to overstep their boundaries. Under no circumstance is this decision to give mayors overarching power without challenge democratic in any way, and through the "HB0194 Bill" introduced by Rep. LaShawn K. Ford, we can enter an era in which every Chicagoan can eventually participate in politics without fear of being talked over or ignored.
