SAVE SUGARS HERITAGE COTTAGE - PROTECT LOCAL HISTORY

The issue

This petition seeks urgent reconsideration and halting of the planned removal of historic Sugars Cottage from the Hawbryn site, 506 Hawkesbury Road, Anstead by Brisbane City Council.  This must occur before any public consultation about the needs of the people and Anstead Bushland Reserves future is completed.

Sugars Cottage was built by Harold Sugars around 1935 and is one of the very few remaining inter-war bungalows from our agricultural past. It represents a valuable community asset and also could be used in the future as a meeting place or local museum, given its significant heritage value and links to the Anstead area pioneering & farming past.

The historic Anstead area was unique blend of mining and growth of farming, especially basalt quarrying, sugar cane and pineapple plantations. It represents the earliest settling in the region and was significant in pastoral and agricultural growth of Brisbane in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

We are asking Brisbane City Council to reconsider its current plan to remove the cottage and sell it to a private owner elsewhere in Queensland. By keeping the cottage in Anstead, Brisbane City Council will secure the legacy of preserving and modernising this building ensuring a better outcome for the local community
Please sign this petition to keep the valuable link of this cottage to Brisbane’s pioneering days and to the Anstead/Pullenvale areas heritage.
