Hello guys, as a fellow Muslim I’d like to bring attention upon the issue regarding long islands not making Eid a public school holiday and giving us 1-2 days off. Growing up as a Muslim and Eid being right around the corner has always been stressful, from talking to teachers for a day off and missing tests and assignments just because we aren’t granted a day off for the holiday. Thinking there would maybe be a change by the time I got older, there hasn’t been one and now when in 2022  elementary Muslim kids start asking their parents about why they have to go to school during Eid, yet not other holidays you know it’s time to change the narrative. It doesn’t make sense how we  get days off for st Patrick’s day, Christmas, and other religious holidays for different religions and not Eid. It’s unfair how Muslims don’t get any days off regarding any of our occasions or holidays.And that’s not just me feeling this way it’s every Muslim on the island. The discrimination we feel is just mind blowing. Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world right now Especially here. NYC has made it a mandatory public school holiday since 2016 then why can’t we in Long Island in 2022 home to an estimated 80,000 Muslims and growing do so. I believe Long Island schools also need to make EID a public school holiday and grant everyone 2 days off from school just like every other public school gets in the city. I believe it’s finally time we as a community regardless of race, religion, or gender stand up for some basic rights towards the Muslim community. Students, Teachers, principles, supervisors, District councils, even the  mayor can all make a change, so please stand with me and the rest of the Muslims on the island to grant us this right, and a chance for change for the Muslim community.
