Longer paternity for Dads

Petition: Extend Paternity Leave for Dads in the UK

To the UK Government, Employers, and All Relevant Authorities:

We, the undersigned, call for a significant extension of paternity leave for fathers in the United Kingdom. The current statutory paternity leave of just two weeks is insufficient for new fathers to bond with their newborns, support their partners, and adjust to the demands of parenthood. We believe that extending paternity leave will have far-reaching benefits for families, workplaces, and society as a whole.

Reasons for Extending Paternity Leave:

 1. Strengthening Family Bonds:
 • Longer paternity leave allows fathers to be more present in the critical early days of a child’s life. This time is essential for bonding with the baby, establishing strong emotional connections, and creating a foundation of trust and security.
 • Fathers who are more involved in early childcare contribute to healthier family dynamics and more equal partnerships.

 2. Supporting Maternal Health:
 • Extended paternity leave enables fathers to provide essential support to mothers during the postpartum period, reducing the physical and emotional strain on new mothers.
 • Research shows that shared parenting responsibilities can reduce the risk of postnatal depression and contribute to better maternal mental health.

 3. Promoting Gender Equality:
 • Extending paternity leave helps to challenge traditional gender roles by encouraging shared responsibility for childcare. This supports the idea that both parents are equally capable and responsible for raising their children.
 • Greater involvement of fathers in childcare can lead to more balanced career opportunities for mothers, reducing the gender pay gap and promoting workplace equality.

 4. Improving Child Development:
 • Early involvement of fathers in childcare has been linked to positive outcomes in a child’s cognitive and emotional development. Children with actively engaged fathers tend to perform better academically, have higher self-esteem, and display fewer behavioral problems.
 • By giving fathers more time at home, we can help foster healthier, happier, and more well-rounded future generations.

5. Enhancing Work-Life Balance:
 • Extended paternity leave allows fathers to balance their professional and personal responsibilities more effectively. This leads to increased job satisfaction, reduced stress, and better mental health.
 • Employers who offer extended paternity leave are more likely to attract and retain talented employees, leading to a more motivated and loyal workforce.

 6. Global Competitiveness:
 • Many countries around the world already offer more generous paternity leave provisions than the UK. Extending paternity leave would bring the UK in line with global standards, demonstrating a commitment to supporting families and promoting work-life balance.

Our Request:

We urge the UK government and employers to extend statutory paternity leave to a minimum of six weeks, with increased flexibility to take this leave over a longer period. This extension should be accompanied by a review of paternity pay to ensure it is sufficient to support families during this important time.

By extending paternity leave, we can create a society that values and supports families, promotes gender equality, and ensures that every child has the best possible start in life. We believe this change is essential for the well-being of parents, children, and society as a whole.

By advocating for longer paternity leave, we can ensure that all families in the UK have the support they need during one of the most critical periods of their lives.
