Long Island is not just where I live it is my home. Like so many residents, I have built my life here. I have walked these woods, swam in the Bay and Ocean, water skied in the Sound, and  enjoyed the beauty of our open spaces, planted roots in my community, and trusted that the water coming from my tap is safe for my family and neighbors. These natural resources were not created overnight. The forests, wetlands, and aquifer beneath us have protected generations of Long Islanders, and we have a responsibility to safeguard them for the future.

Today, our home is at risk. Large corporations like Amazon and those planning data centers and The Holtsville Energy Storage Project  (BESS) are eyeing Long Island for development. While technological and economic development is vital, it should never be at the expense of our environment and local health.

Firstly, data centers consume massive amounts of water—a resource that is becoming increasingly precious. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the average data center uses hundreds of thousands of gallons of water per day in cooling systems. This massive consumption could deplete our aquifers, impacting local water availability and quality.

Next, the development of battery energy storage systems poses potential environmental hazards. These facilities are prone to technological failures leading to harmful chemical leaks. Allowing such energy systems could further stress our already delicate ecosystems.

Moreover, the presence of large corporations like Amazon could drive overdevelopment, which would increase pollution, destroy natural landscapes, and result in groundwater contamination—an undeniable detriment to our community and environment.

Long Island’s distinctiveness lies in its harmony between modernity and nature. By opposing these developments, we preserve this balance. We need to champion sustainable growth, advocate for economic activities that respect our natural surroundings, and invest in green infrastructure that ensures water safety and ecosystem protection.

I call on all Long Islanders, policymakers, and environmental advocates to stand together and resist these plans. We must demand research into alternative locations for such industrial activities, enforce stricter regulations on their environmental impact, and prioritize the protection of our essential water resources. Your action is needed today to ensure a thriving Long Island tomorrow.
