Bring the New York Islanders back to Long Island
The Issue
The New York Islanders have had a memorable 43 years on Long Island. They have become the 'home-town' team. The goods guys. 4-time champions.
However, the issue with renovating the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum or building a new stadium nearby, turned into a political mess. Politicians simply put off the Islanders saying how a new renovated complex would add an unnecessary tax burden to Nassau County taxpayers. Opinions began to go different ways and nothing came together for a deal to keep the Islanders in Long Island. Now, the islanders are off to Brooklyn.
But the biggest mistake was taking the only major professional sports team of long island out. A stadium that potentially brought life to Hempstead, Long Island. 17,686 fans could pile into 'the barn' on any given home game. That's 41 home games that will no longer be in long island. 41 home games that nearby restaurants, hotels, car services will no longer be needed. Taking the islanders away from Long Island will negatively hurt the economy in the town of Hempstead. The coliseum brought jobs, business, and passion to the people of Long Island.
As a season-ticket holder since 1999, I was proud to say this was the most special season for myself as a fan of the islanders. The coliseum rocked all year long. The islanders finished with a record 47-28-7 and clinched a playoff spot. They won the last game at the coliseum, a game 6 win against the Washington Capitals. Unfortunately, they lost game 7 in Washington. But the future is bright for the New York Islanders.
