Initially Sadiq Khan told us it was safe to use the tube. Then he slashed services and made it unsafe for us to do so without risking lives and prevented social distancing for those forced to use it to get to work, our NHS staff and other essential workers that had no choice. Then today without warning or consultation, he announced that the congestion charge for London is being re-introduced after its Covid-19 suspension. He coupled this with the additional announcement that the price would be raised by a massive 30% to £15 a day, that it will be enforced 7 days a week and that the time of operation would also be extended until 10pm. All of this when Londoners are struggling to work and earn a living, have lost their jobs and businesses and are being told to go to work if they can but not to use London Transport. This is nothing more than TFL looking to recoup money they have used in the pandemic from those who have never felt more vulnerable, financially strained and needing help from their leaders. There is no congestion in the City at weekends or after 7pm when people are at home or heading home. How are we going to rebuild London after the devastation that Covid-19 has delivered and it is not over yet sadly. He is now forcing people to go back to London Transport whilst telling them not to! We ask Parliament to overturn this attack on working Londoners and give us the help we need rather than more taxes imposed by a mayor who hates cars and drivers without regard for those who have to use them.
