Save The Secombe Theatre

This petition had 1,368 supporters

We oppose the proposed closure of The Secombe Theatre and call on The London Borough of Sutton to take positive steps to facilitate community leadership, extending the feasibility period to 31 March 2016.

The Secombe Theatre is more than just a building. It is a community hub that brings people, groups and schools together for enjoyment. It is a place that provides identity to our community and without this kind of facility; it will become just yet another bleak suburb that lacks character.

If the Council hadn’t failed to promote The Secombe Theatre, they may have avoided such drastic action. The Secombe Centre was under threat in 2002, so matters have come in full circle. That’s why Sutton residents want a sustainable solution that will continue to enrich our borough with a range of performing arts, cultural activities and the development of local talent.

Closures will have a serious impact on the local economy. People won’t be using the pubs, restaurants and shops before or after going to the theatre, and car parking revenue will also be lost if these facilities close. The loss of the Secombe Theatre will be another reason for not bringing the tram and other investment to Sutton.
