Dear fellow resident,
Thanks so much for signing the petition. It is clear that thousands of Newham residents are opposed to this tax and now some councillors are asking for this charge to be paused for the immediate future. Unfortunately the Mayor and Cabinet are refusing to change their mind and listen to the people. This battle is not over please help by either doing one or all of the following.
1. Copy and paste the letter below and send to all 59 councillors and the Mayor. Please add your name at the bottom. Email addresses are below.
2. Encourage every other person in the Borough you know who shares your views on this issue to do the same. Share your views and posts on social media.
3. Write a letter to the Newham Recorder expressing why you think this new tax is unfair. newsdesk@newhamrecorder.co.uk
4. Share this website via social media or other means.

We can still win this battle but we need your support.

Dear Mayor and Councillors,
The new car tax is unfair.
Those who pollute our neighbourhood including the thousand of motorists who use the A13, A12, and A406 who pass through our Borough everyday don’t pay the tax. The airport and other large companies that pollute our neighbourhood don’t pay the tax. If you are lucky enough, or rich enough, to have a private driveway or access to a private car park, you don’t pay the tax. The motorists and companies that pollute upwind in London don’t pay the tax.
However if you own a car, that for the majority of the week is parked on a Newham street, you have to cough up for this new tax. Over 89% of us said in the consultation that we didn’t want this new tax but yet you implemented it anyway. The Mayor says she wants a “beacon of democracy” but yet struggles to implement the basic concepts of it.
Thousands of us signed petitions and told you that this new tax was unfair and yet the Mayor and cabinet are still implementing it during the most challenging economic period of a generation. The 20% discount for the first year is not going to appease us. The Mayor of London is already implementing a policy to tackle this very issue with the introduction of the ULEZ this year, so why burden residents with another stealth tax.
A Labour LBN made a promise that the first car permit was always going to be free and a Labour LBN is breaking that promise. A Labour Mayor and Cabinet are not listening to their own back bench councillors who are now opposed to this charge.
What we need is thousands of new charging points installed across the borough to help us transition to electric cars in the upcoming years, not a stealth tax to plug budget shortfalls. The extra 40 charging points recently announced is no where near enough to help this transition happen quickly.
We hope that you can listen to us, the people. Install thousands of charging points as soon as possible and stop this tax. This is the best way to help us all breathe healthier air.
Kind Regards
