Save Brent Lea Recreation Ground

Brent Lea Recreation Ground is an idyllic little plot just outside the heart of Brentford. The land originally belonged to the Duke of Northumberland and it is home to mature fruit trees, wild birds and bats. It's proximity to historical battle sites and previous Roman finds makes it of great archaeological interest.

Though underfunded for many years, it is used daily whatever the weather. As it is a walled site with one entrance, its rolling meadows are a fantastically safe place for children to play and for people to walk their dogs.

And now the London Borough of Hounslow Council intend to sell it off.

The Council claim the Recreation Ground is underused and have suggested that it is a suitable site for Floreat Education to build a new Free School. The limited road access to the Recreation Ground means that a school here would cause dangerous traffic conditions for pupils, staff, local residents and all along the busy London road.

Despite heavy local opposition, a split vote granted Floreat planning permission to build a temporary school on Brent Lea Recreation Ground for 2 years. Undeterred by the temporary nature of the planning permission, the Council Cabinet granted itself the right to sell a 125 year lease for almost half the park. That's over 1.2 acres of public land - our land - for a mere £60,000.

Although the lease is for half of the site, it would be for the half containing the only entrance. Access to the remaining area - both during construction and after - is still uncertain. With the population of Brentford increasing rapidly over the next 10 years halving the local Recreation ground simply makes no sense. It is Metropolitan Open Land, which grants it the same rights as the Green Belt and should therefore only built upon in exceptional circumstances.

In a highly unusual move, a group of Labour and Conservative Councillors have called for the Council Cabinet's decision to be reviewed by the Scrutiny Committee. This clearly shows the unpopularity of this decision.

Please sign this petition to show the London Borough of Hounslow Council that Brent Lea Recreation Ground needs to be saved for use as a recreation ground by the local residents. Other sites can be found for schools, they don't need to be built on our invaluable open spaces. The more people who sign, the more we can demonstrate just how much local opposition there is to this plan.
