Fire Michael Waldron

Fire Michael Waldron

The Issue

For years the LGBT+ community has fought for their place in media. The number of lgbt+ youth that have committed suicide in the last decade is astounding. Feelings of loneliness and isolation and the fear that something about them is "wrong" is what leads these kids to take their lives. Helpful media coverage of lgbt+ relationships is crucial to helping people understand that they aren't "wrong" they aren't "broken" and they don't need to be fixed.

In 2021 we were given the Loki show. It seemed a wonderful gift at the beginning, with hope for great representation of lgbt, depression, grief, and many other things. However it very quickly proved to be a painful ordeal to watch. By forcing a romance between Loki and Sylvie they not only undermined Loki as a character and his personal self worth arc, they undermined Sylvie as well. Both characters are great but the point of Loki's need to learn to love himself is thrown out the window by making it romantic. Not to mention how disgusting it is to have the two of them together as they are variants of eachother and therefore share the same family. It's gross and incestuous.

Many people have been speaking out about Michael Waldron not representing Loki properly. And to these complaints he says that's its the writers job to "trust their own instincts" rather than the desires of fans. (The Direct, Richard nebons, Loki writer says season 2...) He claims the ideas that many have of representation are merely fan service and will be ignored. What, pray tell, is the intention of the show then? Who is the show for if not the fans? Is it for Michael? What's the point of writing and creating a show that doesn't care about the fans opinions or wishes.

Not only does Michael not seem to care about the fans, he has not spent nearly enough time with the source material to have a proper understanding of the characters and their driving forces. Loki especially. He can't do the character justice if he doesn't understand him. The writers team watched the Thor movies a month before writing. And hadnt even seen the first avengers movie, according to Michaels own tweet: "not watching this movie [avengers] until now was a HUGE mistake." Yes Waldron, it was. How can you write a show about a character if you've never seen the movie it's from. Lokis character in the show is directly following the 2012 avengers movie. And since he hadn't seen it at the time of writing, it explains the lack of proper characterization.

And so here's my wish, that we could get Michael Waldron off the team of writers.and maybe his team too. They are butchering the story and character of Loki, who the show is supposedly about. We want more about his trauma, we want to see him love his Jotun form. We want to see him find his way. He is an incredible character and possibly the most complex of the phase 4 characters. Do him the justice he deserves. Get a writer who understands him and will write him right, and care about the fans. There's a balance but I know there are people out there who can do it. And also listen to Tom more. He's played the character for years. He knows him better than anyone.
