Misogynistic dress code

The Issue

Public schools dress code has been targeting young girls who are just now trying to become confident and comfortable in their own skin. Many schools like to preach about helping kids with mental health issues by: talking to trusted adults and expressing yourself.

A female student at a brevard county public school was confronted for a dress code (of about an inch of her torso showing) by a female administrator. She decided to try to understand by talking to a trusted teacher after the encounter out of confusion and discomfort. The administrator then proceeded to pull her out of her class in the middle of exams, interrupting not only the class but also disregarding the education of the student herself. The student was threatened with suspension for being “unwilling disobedient” after wanting to talk to her teacher. She was given three days of detention and told that if she ever broke the dress code again that she would be suspended or even expelled.

Additionally, her and her classmates where overcome with confusion and anger as there are plenty inconsistencies with who and what is dress coded at school. The dress code has been used to target students with a specific body type and is not evenly enforced with every student. All is students ask is to consistently enforce the dress code or have a more relaxed one due to repeated discipline on one end of the spectrum of growing bodies that are commonly found in school hallways.

During the crisis we are currently having to deal with has already had a tremendous effect on a countless number of students. Depression, anxiety, and stress has been the first things on our minds, not only is this dress code not appropriately enforced but it is also biased. This is distorting the way young females see them self’s and promoting the idea that woman need to cover themself in order to be respected. Students getting dress coded for a undergarment strap showing, cleavage, and it goes as far as a shoulder being exposed.

Please sign this petition to bring the issue to light. I hope to brings this petition to administration to initiate change to this situation.
