Finish Two Coves Community Garden Construction!

Two Coves Community Garden is a volunteer-run community garden on city-owned land in the triangle between 8th St, Astoria Blvd, and 30th Avenue.  We host public open hours every weekend, offer education and entertainment programs, and partner with many neighborhood organizations to serve the community.

On March 26, 2012, city contractors fenced off our gathering area for construction of a shade structure, food preparation area, and water feature.  They predicted the work would be complete before the end of the 2012 growing season, and promised to finish by March 2013.

Months later, we are told that all the work was substandard and must be redone.  Yet no work or repairs have been done this year.  The construction site is unsightly.  The weeds inside the fence are spreading into the volunteer-maintained parts of the garden.  The construction site blocks the view across the garden, making the whole public space feel unsafe and unwelcoming.  What is most frustrating: the Parks Department has refused to tell us when the construction will be finished.

We, the undersigned, want the entire garden made safe and enjoyable again.

Parks Department:  Please provide the following information about the construction project at Two Coves Community Garden to Vanessa Jones-Hall, the Garden’s Primary Contact with GreenThumbNYC.

  -- A schedule for completion

-- The name of the company that will complete the Two Coves Community Garden project, if any company has been chosen.

Elected Officials:  We ask for your support in encouraging the Parks Department to complete capital construction in Two Coves Community Garden and to restore public access to the entire Garden.

Thank you.
