Dear Community Stakeholders,
I am writing to update you on our ongoing efforts to preserve 2201 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd as permanent low-income driven affordable housing for Harlem residents.
As many of you are aware, our community recently faced a significant challenge when a proposal to convert 2201 ACP Jr Blvd, a luxury condo into a temporary family shelter for asylum seekers was made. I am pleased to inform you that, due to our collective efforts and steadfast advocacy, we have successfully halted this plan.
On March 18, we witnessed the Children's Rescue Fund, slated to operate the shelter, removing items from the condo. This was a pivotal moment in our fight to maintain the integrity of our community. Our goal remains clear: to ensure that 2201 serves as a beacon of affordable housing in Harlem and not as a temporary shelter.
To further strengthen our position, we took legal action by filing an injunction(civil docket for case #1:24-cv-01606-JGLC) on March 1. This legal maneuver aims to prevent temporary shelter agreements, recognizing the grave and irreparable harm such initiatives could inflict on Harlem.
Additionally, I am pleased to share that on Monday, March 25, the Community Board 10 Housing Committee convened to address our concerns. A "Resolution Draft" (click link below and see resolution draft ) was presented by the Housing Chair, Charles Powell, proposing to halt the construction of shelters in Central Harlem. While the item was not voted on during the meeting, it will be revisited and discussed further at the next upcoming General Board meeting.
Let us continue to stand united as #oneharlem, spread the word, and share the petition.
Best Regards,
