Reform Requirements for Law Enforcement

Reform Requirements for Law Enforcement
The Issue
Our justice system needs reformed, starting with new requirements for ALL, existing and future, police officers.
It is evident that it is too easy these days to become, AND remain, a police officer. These are the changes we are asking for:
- Body Cams- Every police officer needs to wear a body cam. This will not only hold officers accountable for police brutality, it will help tell the true story in every situation. If body cam footage is in any way altered or deleted, it is grounds for termination from police force and possible charges.
- More Training Hours- In the state of Indiana, the "standard" training program to become a police officer is 480 hours (20 days).. And only 300 in field and 50 at home training hours for towns with one Marshal and two Deputy Marshals... However, it takes ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED hours (62.5 days) to get a cosmetology license in Indiana. And to become an instructor in cosmetology? An additional 1000 hours... It's insane, the astronomical difference in hours between someone that wields a gun and someone that wields a curling iron. It goes without saying that the amount of training hours to become a cop should be more than that to become a cosmetologist.
- Probationary Period of More Than Six Months- At least one year probationary period for new police officers.
- More Extensive Background Checks- In addition to no "criminal background," there needs to be background checks done on things like mental health history in the family.
- Mental Re-Evaluation Every Six Months- We wholeheartedly understand that it is not easy to be a police officer in this day and age. The things that most police offers face is enough to affect anyone's mental health. This is why a mental health re-evaluation every six months is NECESSARY to be in place, and argumentatively most important within this petition. We need not only help those officers that may be struggling silently, but make sure they are still fit for the job, every now and then.
