MORE LIGHT MORE POWERLondon, ENG, United Kingdom
Nov 17, 2015
Over 250 people filled St Leonard’s Church, Shoreditch last night to discuss the plans to develop the Bishopsgate Goodsyard. The failure of the scheme to include anything more than a bare minimum of affordable housing was the subject of heated discussion. Both Mayors spoke out on the subject.
Hackney mayor Jules Pipe commented “It is an obscenity that the plans are full of luxury housing,” he said. “The developers say they need that level of profit to build it, but I think this is untrue.”
Tower Hamlets Mayor John Biggs added “I am not against towers when they are in the right place, but we’ve allowed ourselves to get into a lazy state of mind where towers are the answer to everything. We need to have proper rules about where we build tall buildings in London.”
It was fantastic that the boroughs’ mayors are willing to stand up and debate their position and take on board the views of the audience of affected and interested people.
The developers declined our invitation to take part in this event.
