Environmental Pollution in the Philippines

The Issue

Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems that the world has ever faced. According to the United Nations, uncontrolled, rapid population growth has contributed to extreme poverty, environmental degradation, and pollution in the Philippines. Pollution disturbs our ecosystem and the balance in the environment. With modernization and development in our lives, pollution has reached its peak, giving rise to global warming and human illness. The release of sulfur dioxide and other hazardous gases into the air causes global warming and acid rain which in turn lead to increased temperatures, out-of-season rains, and droughts worldwide. The decrease in the quality of air causes several diseases including asthma and lung cancer, as well as chest pain, throat inflammation, and cardiovascular disease. It also makes it difficult for the animals to thrive. Water pollution not only damages the aquatic life but it also contaminates the entire food chain causing serious consequences for humans who rely on these resources. Water-borne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea have also become more prevalent throughout the Philippines. The release of industrial waste, mining, and deforestation also exploits the soil. Also, due to the constant use of insecticides and pesticides, the soil may become infertile, preventing plants from growing properly. When this happens, they are unable to hold the soil, resulting in soil erosion.

The effects of pollution are very evident, and the solutions are only in the hands of humans. Only humans have the capacity to make the world pollution-free. It is worth noting that while the results of pollution differ, they have one specific impact: they degrade the quality of life. Pollution has an adverse impact on humans in general, and regardless of its severity, all of us have encountered its ill-effects at some point in time. Let’s take the initiative to solve this problem. Let’s reduce, reuse, and recycle, conserve water, plant more trees, and choose sustainable practices. Let's cooperate and have unity to prevent damage to the environment, have the foresight to understand the devastating consequences of pollution in the next fifty to a hundred years or so, and ensure an environment that is safe and healthy for ourselves and future generations.
