REAL CANADIAN SUPERSTORE ELIMINATES STUDENT DISCOUNT
The Issue
The Real Canadian Superstore, owned and operated by Loblaw Companies Ltd., has decided to eliminate the 10% student discount on Tuesdays. Students used to receive 10% off their groceries and all other items (with some exceptions) when they shopped on Tuesday nights. There was no notice and students found out at the cash on the first Tuesday after the Labour Day weekend. A 10% savings before tax amounts to a significant amount of savings. If a student spends $150 a week on groceries alone, they save enough in one 8-month term to pay for books, a parking permit, or even three quarters of one 3-credit University course.
Another important note is that the Galen Weston Foundation provides scholarships to students yet is willing to remove a 10% student discount from their stores.
As a mature, part-time student, I will lose about $800 annually which is a significant amount towards my education. I am tired of the food corporations cutting back on the size of their packaging while increasing prices and now, not even supporting nickel-and-diming students (both college and university) in their local communities.
