Hello to all of you who have so kindly supported this petition on Change.org.
I want to let you know that I’ve had a very encouraging meeting with the Senior Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Loblaw Companies Inc., Sonya Fiorini.
Ms. Fiorini is on board with us. She is listening. She agrees that consumers should have choice. She tells me that this issue is extremely important to the company, that Loblaw wants to do the right thing, is working on “next steps”, and will be announcing new strategies to reduce plastic waste soon.
This is in addition to the strides the company has made so far when it comes to reducing plastic packaging of in-house brands like President’s Choice and No Name.
Ms. Fiorini agrees that action needs to be taken, and she is in alignment with our vision of working towards a plastic-free future.
Clearly, this will take time.
The next step is for Loblaw Companies Inc. to require its suppliers begin using environmentally friendly packaging made of plant based materials and ditch plastic for good.
Loblaw has 2,000 stores across Canada and deals with thousands of suppliers. Changing the practices of these suppliers is the only way the world at large is truly going to change. As the largest food retailer in Canada, Loblaw is in a position to use its considerable leverage to become an industry leader.
I will be following up with Ms. Fiorini. It's more important than ever to keep sharing this petition, to reach as many people as possible, and to make sure that Loblaw follows through.
