The Government is in the process of quietly changing the laws which currently enforce standards of animal welfare. They are doing this hoping that we won't notice until it is too late. But it has been noticed so we need to respond. The inspection and upkeep of these standards is going to be handed over to the private companies who breed the animals. The inevitable result will be less acvountability and protection for our animals. Our standards of current welfare are what protect animals from cruelty in the farming trade. These changes go to the heart of not only animal food welfare but also of food safety. This deregulation is the beginning of a potentially dangerous sequence of events all in the name of cheaper food production.
I believe that the British people care more about animal welfare than they do about saving a few pence on the price of a chicken. We do not want the return of more battery farming and less regulation so please join me in sending this petition to the Government.
