Yorkshire Water has launched a review into the discovery of snares at three sites it leases for grouse shooting across North and West Yorkshire.
The review comes as the contraptions were found set only meters away from popular visitor destinations, including Bronte Waterfalls at Haworth and Stanbury Moors, and Thruscross Reservoir.
Snares are deployed on grouse shooting estates to capture foxes, who are killed alongside other native wildlife in order to increase game bird numbers for the guns. A 2012 DEFRA report shows that only 25 per cent of animals caught in snares are foxes, with the other three-quarters including badgers, cats, dogs and deer.
