Reject Planning Application 18F/1649
The Issue
“As a local resident I’m deeply concerned that the City Council Planning Committee is considering a recommendation on Tuesday to build over 500 flats at the top of the Baltic Triangle. The last thing we need in the area is more flats. The scheme will mean Constellations is forced to move and we lose the ‘spinning trees’ at the top of the Triangle. Please think again before unwanted and unnecessary development wrecks the Triangle”
“This Tuesday the City Council Planning Committee is looking at a proposal that could wreck the Baltic Triangle and prevent crucial improvements to the rail network. The plans for over 500 new flats at the top of the Baltic Triangle are a complete NO NO. The last thing the area needs is more flats. But the site chosen – the junction of Parliament Street and St James Street - would make it next to impossible to re-open St James Station. The old station, sitting across the road, would create a massive boost for the Baltic, Cains and the waterfront. But there needs to be an entrance and exit. Building 500 flats on the logical point of entry would put the blocks on it. I hope Planning Committee members see sense and knock this into the long grass.”
“Most readers of the Echo would agree that the last thing the Baltic Triangle needs is more flats. So the proposal before the Planning Committee this Tuesday to build over 500 flats is unwelcome. But what is shocking about the report to the Committee is that it proposes to waive £1.4 million in Section 106 payments (the tax on developers), essentially handing over a big gift to the developer in question. Over the summer new play areas are being installed across the city – funded by Section 106 payments. I’d rather see developers pay for new play areas, alleyway improvements and green spaces than give them a blank cheque for building little boxes.”
