Change the Name of David O. Dodd Elementary

Change the Name of David O. Dodd Elementary
The Issue
As a confederate spy, David O. Dodd is not a symbol of patriotism and therefore is unfit to be memorialized by our public school system. Originally a part of the Pulaski County Special School District, David O. Dodd Elementary opened in 1924.The climate of the city was rampant with racial intimidation combined with the lack of accountability for those committing heinous crimes. This was 59 years after the Civil War ended, and merely 3 years before a racist mob lynched John Carter, an African American man, in Downtown Littler Rock. Today, 96 years later, we no longer accept that our children must attend schools named after Confederate spies. Our children deserve to not be in a school named after an individual who sought to maintain white supremacy and the institution of slavery. In 1987, the Little Rock School District annexed David O. Dodd Elementary without considering changing its name. We demand that the Little Rock School District change the name of David O. Dodd Elementary and break the ties to a shameful racist past, pressing forward with the positive reconstruction of the Little Rock School District. Let's help create a better education for our youth by prioritizing the best solutions for social change. Please sign and share this petition in support!
