Ask Little League to require jaw guards ("C Flaps") on baseball batting helmets.

The Issue

Several amateur ball players have an early end to their career by taking errant pitches to the face. As well, ball shyness at the plate is, in part, due to the exposure of the face and jaw to pitches.

To improve the safety and encourage success at the plate, we ask major national organizations in charge of governing youth and amateur baseball to require jaw guards (aka "C-Flaps") on batting helmets. This would include, among others, Little League, Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken, USSSA, Perfect Game, Triple Crown and NFHS.

Requiring a safe game through bat and ball restrictions, helmet requirements and rule modifications are commonplace among national organizing bodies. National governing bodies of amateur baseball requiring players in their tournaments and affiliated leagues to use a jaw guard (often referred to as a C-Flap) would be a wise and prudent move.

As well, requiring jaw guards on helmets would force manufacturers to produce a range of affordable options in the space. More than a few players have been saved by extended jaw protection on baseball batting helmets.
