Safe Parking at For Student Residents of Lion's Gate at Penn State Abington

Most upperclassmen at Penn State campuses are allotted safe parking spots at the dorms and apartments. We, the residents of Lion's Gate (at Penn State Abington, a commuting campus), are not so fortunate. Although there are multiple public parking destinations and lots both at Lion's Gate and in the surrounding area, the upperclassmen residents of Lion's Gate are being forced to park 1 mile away (20 min walk) on campus - despite multiple complaints, reports, and concerns waged against the decision - or face fines for parking outside of their own home.

Nittany Apartments ( a school-run apartment building), College Station, and Regency Towers residents are allowed to park their cars outside of their apartments in specified lots. Current sophomore Lion's Gate residents were told that they would also be given this ability to park close to their home when reapplying for housing last year, only to be informed of the opposite on move-in day. We see this as unfair for multiple reasons; to start off, Lion's Gate has a large parking lot that only ever has 5-10 cars in it when its maximum capacity is about 35. The reasoning levied upon the residents is that the surrounding Abington families "don't want to endure the traffic associated with student parking." If that's true, then it seems unfair that patrons from the local synagogue are often allowed to fill the parking spaces outside of Lion's Gate to maximum capacity on Jewish holidays and some high-frequency sabbath days. Lion's Gate residents also find this reason inconsiderate, as many students therefore must endure dark, freezing, and/or rainy conditions for at least 20 minutes just to gain access to their vehicles. this undermines the sense of community we've been expected to uphold as fellow Abington residents. Another reason we ask for change is that if our vehicles are to be vandalized, burglarized, or damaged, we can't know until the next time we go to campus, leaving no way to hold a criminal accountable for infractions committed on weekends. There are shuttles that can take us to campus, but they typically run late (or off-schedule), only operate during business hours Monday-Friday, and do not favor students who have been waiting longer than other students (in other words, many students will force themselves to the front of the shuttle lines and disregard the already waiting students). Lion's Gate sophomores are also now limited in their opportunities for networking and grocery shopping, which are increasingly important as they settle into self-dependency. The shuttles only take students to one grocery store (that hasn't integrated LionCash, the student banking system).

We believe that if the people making/endorsing these rules had children who were forced into this situation, they would also be upset. To this point, there has been no information shared with residents about a possible solution to this obvious problem. Therefore, as a respectful request, we impart this petition upon the greater public to decide whether or not the residents of Lion's Gate should have to endure these conditions any longer. We are hoping that if we present this petition to the University Police and Public Safety Department, they might understand the widespread and persistent affect the conditions can have on residents, and allow or create a new parking space for the betterment of its hardworking Lion's Gate pupils.
