Declare a climate emergency in Westminster City Council

The Issue

Please sign and share this petition to encourage Westminster City Council to Declare a Climate Emergency and develop an action plan on how and when they will respond to this emergency.

The situation has become so precarious : The (IPCC) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s recent report has described how the rise in temperature of over  2°C could become hugely costly and detrimental to the planet.

However, it is still possible for all governments to act now in order to limit the global warming to 1.5°C.

The alarming signs of climate change are there and can no longer be ignored by the people responsible for our well-being. We can not rely any longer on individual, single actions, we need the support of our local authorities to take action.

Many councils in the UK and around the World have now declared "A Climate Emergency" with the borough of Hackney being the latest in March 2019.

So, what is preventing Westminster City Council to do the same ?

- Declare a ‘Climate Emergency’ that requires urgent action.

- Make the Council’s activities net-zero carbon by 2030

- Achieve 100% clean energy across the Council’s full range of functions by 2030

- Support and work with all other relevant groups and organisations ( example Extinction Rebellion) towards making the entire area zero carbon within the same timescale;

- Report on the level of investment in the fossil fuel industry that our pensions plan and other investments have, and review the Council’s investment strategy to give due consideration to climate change impacts in the investment portfolio;

- Call on the UK Government to provide the powers, resources and help with funding to make this possible, and ask local MPs to do likewise;

Your opinion matters to us and if you care about the future of the planet, your future, we will ask you to sign and share !

Thanks for all the Support !
